Shifty. He always thinks he's in a Western, but doesn't realize that if he were really in one, he would be cast as the bad guy. He's the rich cattleman's second son, who realizes that the honest, upright first son will inherit the ranch and so gets rid of his brother. The rest of the movie he moans and whines, and finally at the end a drunken Walter Brennan captures him right before he is about to shoot Gary Cooper in the back.
