Wow. Jerry Falwell dead at 73.
I got nothin'. Too shocked.
Good thing they still have Dobson et al. to keep up the hatin', tho.
UPDATE: Bearing in mind that Reverend Falwell held himself out to be a "real" Christian, let's take a look at some of his more "peaceable" comments, courtesy of Eschaton reader certified mutant enemy:
On 9-11:“I put all the blame legally and morally on the actions of the terrorist, [but America’s] secular and anti-Christian environment left us open to our Lord’s [decision] not to protect. When a nation deserts God and expels God from the culture … the result is not good… The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People for the American Way — all of them who have tried to secularize America — I point the finger in their face and say, ‘You helped this happen.’” - 9/13/01, on The 700 Club with Pat Robertson
On homosexuality:
“Militant homosexuals are plotting a dangerously different future for America… Militant homosexuals plan to take over both major political parties. Militant homosexuals plan to force every major American corporation to set official policies giving them favored job status . . . to pass laws forcing churches and Christian schools to hire homosexuals and lesbians even if they flaunt their life style.” - Washington Post, 9/27/84
On separation of church and state:
“The idea that religion and politics don’t mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country.” - NYTimes, 5/25/86
On segregation:
“The true Negro does not want integration. He realizes his potential is far better among his own race. Who then is propagating this terrible thing? First of all, we see the hand of Moscow in the background . . .” - 1958 sermon

Well, I'm not an asshole like him, so my homo self wishes him a more enlightened journey and his loved ones condolences.

As someone asked over at Americablog, why didn't Pat Robertson tell us Falwell was going to die?
Posted by: Lynne | May 15, 2007 at 02:04 PM
Sharkbabe, you said it so well.
as for me - I hope he likes warmth.

Ding, Dong, Etc.

I for one will not grieve the passing of this profoundly evil man. His religion teaches that you shall be judged as you have judged others. I just hope the unlamented (ir)Rev. Falwell likes warm weather.

My immediate reaction: "Good." As in "Good riddance."
My next thought: wonder if Bush will attend the funeral? That should make for some great publicity photos, no? He can give a eulogy about what great fun it was when he and Jerry used to get together to snort coke off of teenage evangelical hookers.
Posted by: tekel | May 15, 2007 at 03:04 PM
tekel, that was my immediate thought - How will Bush turn this into yet another week-long photo-op spectacle filled with strange and creepy facial expressions, bad touching and $700 haircuts?!

Samsarra will recycle him as pond scum to relearn all the lessons of life over again.
Or perhaps as whatever pond scum eats.

Welcome to Hell Jerry - at long last you've arrived at the one place you truly deserve to be!
Posted by: raceynora | May 15, 2007 at 03:42 PM
Yeah, baby! I can already smell that rancid flaccid meat burning in the fires of hell, rending all that jowly fat out of his utterly corrupt mind and body. Was it the "massage" he was getting at the end? The drugs? Proof that God had had enough of his filth? Well, anyway, it's one less ayatollah to poison America, 'though there are plenty to follow in his fundamentalist hoofprints.

Nah, he's back in the outhouse with his mom after all these years. No word on how Compari stock has been affected on the markets. Maybe tomorrow...

Somewhere in Paraguay:
"Paging Ken Lay, you have a guest at the Visitor's Lobby."
Posted by: queek | May 15, 2007 at 04:35 PM
how would Jerry eulogize himself? "God killed me for being straight."
Posted by: Sharkbabe | May 15, 2007 at 04:44 PM
Helloooo. Hellooooo. Anybody out there? I'm dead. Time for me to go to heaven. Helloooo. Helloooo. Hello God? God? I can't fucking hear you, God. Helloooo?

So...is bush going to put the bigot in the Rotunda???? Will the liberal media force feed us pictures from the childhood of the bigot???? Will the world have to hear bush funble through another speech??? Please no
Posted by: jerri | May 15, 2007 at 06:39 PM
The gates of hell are open wide.
What's that I hear? Frying?
I ain't got no heartache to spare. He made life miserable for militant homosexuals with every word he sold. Er, spoke.
Posted by: terri | May 15, 2007 at 06:49 PM
It was no doubt the weight of his awesome hypocracy that got him in the end. However, like the Hydra, no doubt there's another just like him waiting to spring forth and continue his, er, cause.

Luckily for us, Satan had habanero burritos last night. As painful going out as they are going in!

Number three on my list of the axis of evil cheated the rapture......May, Robertson and Dobsen soon follow. I just guess this is God's way of showing his displeasure with all the abomination in this version of the Republicant party.....unfortunate as it is...he will not be missed.
