For smaller infestations, the ACME (ahem) Zombie Detector will do:

A couple of years ago, I spotted a zombie detector that fit on the ceiling like a smoke detector and announced the approach of undead... can't find it now. Sorry. Perhaps you can hookup an infrared security camera? If it isn't alive, and yet walks, an alarm could trigger?
